Ms. Natoli - 6th and 7th Grade Literacy Coach

While examining my philosophy of education and wondering how to write it in one paragraph, my eyes were drawn to a statement on my whiteboard:  “We see things not as they are, but as we are.”(-Unknown)  That is it, I thought, that is my philosophy. Education is arguably the finest profession in the world; it is the one with the most potential impact on individuals and groups as a whole.  Effective teaching is an art form; one which combines the elements of knowledge while simultaneously inviting students into the learning process as welcomed participants.  When our children arrive to school each day, we must embrace them “as they are,” accepting them with all of their enthusiasm, emotional and physical needs, family dynamics, and intellect.  Our acceptance of our students opens those invisible barriers for learning to take place.  If children are wanted, appreciated, and valued, then they are more receptive learners.  Structure, consistency, fairness, and rigorous expectations give them the framework in which success can be fostered. Children do not always arrive at our classrooms with a great sense of “how things are.”  With a combination of acceptance, a belief that all children can learn, and high, structured expectations, anything is possible.

Survey Time!!! For Parents who have students in Advanced Classes!

In Novemb
er 2010, a Bluffton Today article entitled “Middle School Boredom Targeted”  highlighted parental concerns about the school district’s middle school programs.  Since that time, many changes have been made with the intent to stretch each and every learner in every school.

Please take this opportunity to answer a few anonymous questions about the academic programs in our middle schools. Your input will be taken into consideration when planning program adjustments and improvements.  To access the survey, please click on the link below.

The art department at Bluffton Middle is proud of all of the student artwork that is on display at the school and delighted to announce the winners of the Experience Green exhibition. First place was awarded to Joshua C., Second place was awarded to V. W. and Olivia B., and the third place award went to Hannah W. Congratulations to all of our Environmental Artists! And a special thanks to our fabulous art teachers, Ms. Allen and Ms. Foor who made this possible for our students.

Students in Greg Lonz’s ELA classes entered a writing debate contest through Time For Kids Magazine.  The debate question was, “Should schools ban the sale of bottled water?” Ben Kelley was one of two students selected for this article contained within the April 20th Edition that celebrated Earth Day! His written response and a photo of Ben were included in the magazine.  This debate and his response can be found on page 14 of the magazine. Congratulations to Mr. Lonz, Ben Kelley and all of our students who entered the writing debate!

Hilton Head-Bluffton
Chamber of Commerce
recognizes Lois Lewis from Bluffton Middle School as this year's recipient of the Sue West Educator of the Year award!
HILTON HEAD – A Bluffton Middle School science teacher was surprised Saturday night with the news that she had been selected as the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s “Sue West Educator of the Year.”

Veteran teacher Lois Lewis was honored during the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s annual ball.  A Beaufort County teacher for 26 years, she has worked at schools in Bluffton, Hilton Head and Whale Branch.  She was one of five finalists for 2011-12 District Teacher of the Year.

Lewis holds a National Board certification in early adolescent science and is a teacher specialist in middle school science. She completed her certification as Master Naturalist in 2009 and was chosen as Conservationist of the Year in 2006 by the South Carolina State Wildlife Association.

“You know, there are many people in our lives who impact us positively: our parents, our grandparents, coaches and friends,” said Melissa Azallion, an attorney at Nexsen Pruet and a member of the chamber’s Business in Education Partnership Committee.  “But a good teacher is a rare gem, and this award is designed to honor that kind of person.”

The award is named for Sue West, a science teacher who moved from Camden to Hilton Head in the 1980s and taught at May River Academy, which later merged with Sea Pines Academy to become Hilton Head Preparatory School.  West continued teaching during a battle with cancer that began when she was diagnosed at age 28 and ended with her death in 1995 at the age of 42.  The proposal for a chamber award named in her honor was born at West’s memorial service.

Superintendent Valerie Truesdale attended Saturday night’s announcement and said the recognition for Lewis was “richly deserved.”

“She is an outstanding teacher and an outstanding person,” Truesdale said, “We’re very proud of her achievements and immensely gratified that she has chosen to teach in Beaufort County.”

According to Bluffton Middle School Principal Dereck Rhoads, Lewis teaches more than just science.

“Lois cares deeply for her students,” Rhoads said. “Among her great contributions to education are the connections she has fostered between her students and the larger community.”

We LOVE you, Ms. Lewis!!!!!

The Defense Department launched a new website for children experiencing the challenges of military deployments.

This highly interactive website, http://www.MilitaryKidsConnect.org was created by psychologists at the Department of Defense National Center for Telehealth and Technology. This site helps children of deployed parents to better cope with the stress and changing responsibilities of having a parent away from the home and working "in harm's way" for the safety of our country.
